Bit-by-bit brief pain management program

A collaborative codesigned project is improving access to culturally safe pain management information and skills for Aboriginal community members across our region.

The program is codesigned by local Aboriginal Health Workers and Integrated Team Care staff with support from the Pain Management Research Institute, the NSW Agency for Clinical Innovation and Illawarra Shoalhaven and Southern NSW Local Health Districts.

Through co-design, existing pain management resources were adapted to better support Aboriginal Health Workers and care coordinators to better identify chronic pain within their referrals and communities, and address the complexities of pain management.

The Bit-by-Bit program’s key culturally safe elements now include:

  • brief assessment tool

  • self-report measure

  • guidelines for facilitation

  • participant handbook

  • key First Nations videos and support resources.

The program can be delivered to participants as an individual or group setting.
