Weavers support through shared experiences

Weavers is a peer support program that connects people who are caring for a loved one with someone who has first-hand experience of being a carer.

Carers are matched with 1:1 flexible peer support from someone who has been a carer. Weavers support carers to reduce their stress and improve their quality of life, while continuing their carer role. This year COORDINARE funded 3 organisations to deliver Weavers locally.

Weavers has already linked 11 carers with 7 Weaver volunteers. Weavers volunteers and carers report improved:

  • life satisfaction and fulfilment
  • relationships with person they care for
  • levels of informal and formal support
  • time taken for self care
  • sense of safety
  • connection in community
  • self-efficacy in their carer role.

This year, COORDINARE funded 3 organisations to deliver Weavers locally.

The program reaches across the region, and has been implemented in Warilla, Wollongong and Nowra. Weavers and volunteers represent a range of cultural groups, including Filipino, Italian, Serbian, Macedonian, Spanish, German, and Anglo Australian.

Partner(s): Weavers was developed by the Australian Centre for Social Innovation. COORDINARE funded the Illawarra Women’s Health Centre, the Multicultural Communities Council of Illawarra and Mission Australia to deliver the program locally.
